April 21 - 2:00pm until 11:00pm - Savannah
Tybee Island Public Pier - OAA's Astronomy Day
Astronomy Day 2007 Activities for the Savannah Area
The Oglethorpe Astronomical Association's Astronomy Day Program will be held on Saturday, April 21st from 2:00pm until 11:00pm at the Tybee Island Pavilion and Pier. There will be many free and interesting activities for the whole family, with primary focus on observing.
Telescopes will be set up from 2:00pm. During the day, the sun will be viewable safely in both white light and hydrogen alpha wavelengths, showing not only sun spots but also solar prominences in the sun's corona. Telescopes will also show Venus, the moon and Saturn or Mars during the day. There will be a scale model of our solar system starting under the Pavilion and stretching down the beach. See just how vast and empty space really is!
In conjunction with this program, Oatland Island Education Center will host shows every hour on the half hour from 10:30am until 3:30pm in their new, portable planetarium facility. Regular $3 admission to OEIC is required. OEIC's telephone number is 898-3980.
A celestial coloring contest for kids K through 5th grade will be judged by the Tybee Arts Association with prizes from Orion Telescopes. Winners will be announced at 6:00pm.
If you have wanted to own a telescope but don't know how to select one, several telescopes will be on display with knowledgeable guides to assist in your choices. If you own a telescope but have had difficulties, you are welcome to bring it to the pier for some individualized assistance. Some telescopes require set up and adjustments that may be confusing but are not difficult. A little help can make your telescope much easier to enjoy.
After sunset, there will be many celestial objects to observe. Telescopes from 70mm to 12.5" in diameter will show the craters of our moon and the rings of Saturn and its moons. Star clusters, double stars, nebulae and other items will be seen in various scopes and guides from OAA will point out various constellations and answer questions.
Join us for a close up view of many celestial objects and learn about telescopes while enjoying a day at the beach. Note that observing activities may be limited by weather conditions!

Join us as Warren Rupp Observatory and Astronomy For Youth present Astronomy Day at the Observatory. We'll begin our exhibits at 4:00 pm and end when you're ready to go home! Observing through a telescope will be weather dependent, but our exhibits are here for you to enjoy...
Launch Your Astronomy Education! - Miss the last liftoff? Then join us as we launch model rockets and talk about the importance of space and astronomy education as Warren Rupp Observatory and Astronomy for Youth present Astronomy Day!
The Sun - Our Own Super Star! - Have you ever wanted to see what the Sun really looks like? If the weather permits we'll have views of the Sun through a variety of telescopes at different wavelengths. Our solar booth will also present information about how our Sun works and effects space weather!
Black Holes - Have you ever wondered about black holes? How do we know they are there and what makes them work? What would it be like to be pulled into a black hole and can we see it happen? Join us at the Black Hole exhibit to learn more!
Comets and Meteors - Visitors From Space! - Everyone has seen a "shooting star", but do you really know where they come from, how big they are or what they really look like? At our Comets and Meteors exhibit you will have the opportunity to look at real meteorites firsthand and touch a real visitor from outer space. Demonstrations will also include how comets are made and what causes meteor showers!
Moon Walk - Craters and More! - What's on the surface of the Moon and how did the craters form? Do they have names? How big are they and why do they look like they do? Join us at Moon Walk as we present interactive activities as to how craters formed on the Moon and how and when to observe them!
Stellar Spectra - Taste the Rainbow! - Did you know that stars give off rays of light that help us to study what they are made of, how hot they are and how far away? At our Stella Spectra exhibit, you'll learn more about star light and how scientists "see" in color!
