September 15 - 2007 Colorado Astronomy Day
The DAS will conduct solar observing at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science from 11 am to 3 pm and nighttime observing at the University of Denver's Historic Chamberlin Observatory from 6 pm to 11 pm. The DAS will have an attended information table with literature on Colorado amateur astronomy organizations and opportunities at the DMNS during the day.
At Chamberlin, the public will be invited to observe the heavens through the 1894 20-inch Alvin Clark-Saegmuller refractor and dozens of DAS-member telescopes. Public presentations will be given at the DMNS during the day (11 am to 3 pm) and at the Chamberlin Observatory in the evening (6 pm to 7 pm). See http://www.coloradoastronomyday.org for more information.
On Friday September 14th Region 11 ESC "Connect2Texas" and the Frank N. Bash Visitors Center at McDonald Observatory will partner to celebrate Astronomy Day with 3 interactive videoconferences for Texas students in grades 5 thru 8. We hope the Astronomy Day videoconference will excite students about science and technology. During the two-way videoconference, Marc Wetzel and the students will explore the Sun with special telescopes (weather permitting) and make a scale model of our Solar System. At the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to ask their questions to Marc Wetzel and astronomer Dr. Steve Odewahn, who explores our universe with one of the largest telescopes in the world, the 9.2m Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory.
