The Sketch Book

OK, so I'm not at hotshot astrophotographer, and I'm only a so-so artist... but please feel free to have a look...

In "The Sketch Book"!

~ DANCING ON THE MOON ~

Come with me...

Dreaming near Serenitatis...

The Southern Highlands...

On the edge of Plato...

On the "tip" of the Moon... in the Southern Highlands...

Dancing around Gassendi Crater...

Craters Hansteen and Billy...

Magnificent shadow play!! The ancient monument to time... What a terrific crater this is!

Absolute peace... Time for a pleasant "stroll" between Plato and Archimedes...

And loving every minute of the lunacy... ;)

It seems that I have a "thing" about walking the line between the light and the shadows...

And there is no better way to enjoy the shadows than with Selene...

"Won't you meet me on the dark side of the Moon?"

~ SKETCHING SOL ~

The Sun...

Nope... you're not looking at a rendition of a star field. This is how the Sun can appear when it's going through a great series of spots!

Bella de Sol!

These sketches were made over a short period of observing days... I hope it helps show how the dispersion field changes, and the sunspots migrate!

"Just tilt your Sun toward my domain... And my cup runneth over again."

~ CAPTURING GALAXIES ~

The M81 and M82...

Once again, I can never seem quite capture galactic light in a sketch, but I will keep trying...

Barnard's Galaxy ~ NGC6822

What a beautiful and unusual galaxy this is!! I really don't feel this sketch does it justice... but you know, I had to try! (Thanks, Mr. Wizard... for getting me to hunt it up!!)

Galactic Gemstones...

This sketch of the M51 was made using the 17mm sirius plossl and the 12.5 dob... I wish I could convey its' true beauty!!

In Virgo...

The sketch was made using the 32mm televue and the 12.5. And where is this "Playground", you ask? In "the Virgo Field of Dreams".... ;)

A little closer now...

This is the M84/86 grouping... and how fascinating it was to sketch this area!! At first only the two Messier galaxies showed, but as I relaxed my eye, and concentrated on sketch detail, more and more popped out! Look at one... and it's gone! But elsewhere another shows!!

"You've eased my worried mind... for the less I seek, the more I find! It's simple..."

~ Deep Sky ~

Around Antares...

Needful of the Deep Sky, I use the dob... The 12.5 breathes life into the otherwise dim cluster, M4... and through the wide-field vision of the 32mm displays a satisfying starfield and a companion globular, NGC6144.

Double Vision?

Merciful Heavens! (Who? Me???) No... (coffee only tonight, thanks!!) But perphaps YOU are curious to "see" the difference between the 4.5 and the 12.5? So, this night I chose the M5, and the 17mm plossl... Two 'scopes, same eyepiece, same target!! See any difference?? ;)

Sharing...

Although it is not often I share what I feel when I am with Saggitarius, please allow the 4.5 and I to share what we see...

And perhaps one day I will continue to sketch deep sky.

~ TRACING MOVING TARGETS ~

The "Little Rascal"...

What fun this comet gave me! From one part of the sky to an other, I gave chase to this dim "beastie"... What a glorious hunt!! ;)

Chasing Asteroid Ceres...

Occasionally luck will hold, and I get a chance to witness something cool! For July of 2001, Asteroid Ceres was part of "the hunt"... and how fortunate I feel to have had a chance to sketch it during it's visit with the M54 in Saggitarius!

Comet LINEAR AR/2001...

And even more fortunate for the Summer of 2001 was the opportunity to follow Comet LINEAR AR2001!! Unlike the tiny Schaumasse, the AR2001 was, at times, very bright and exciting! It has been a great deal of fun chasing it across the heavens and watching the changes it has made...

"And you run and you run, to catch up with the Sun. But it's sinking... Sneaking around to come up behind you again."

Magic...

"Where there's a Wizard..."

"There's a way..."

My deepest appreciation goes to the talents of YOU, Mr. Wizard! You took my humble sketches... worked a bit of "dark magic" on it... and turned them into something unique! (thank you, jeff...)

Allow me to share...

Playing in "The Field of Dreams"...

And one better...

Knowing what they are!

Simply outstanding...

Mr. Wizard's Magic...

Asteroid Ceres and the M54 ~ How wonderful it is to share! The one the left is the sketch done by Mr. Wizard himself... depicting Ceres visit with the M54! Add it to the sketch on the left, (my own) and double the fun!! Pretty cool, huh? (Very good, Jeff! Let's do it again...)

(Pssst... his sketchs are great! Want to have a peek? Then go here!)

That's all for now... but you can bet your best eyepiece that I'll be adding more!

Now, I'm off to chase the sky...

There's still time to choose the road you're on."
